As an introvert, I value my privacy and prefer one-on-one interactions. Deep conversations have always fascinated me, and I've always had a knack for connecting with different people and listening to their stories.

In 2013, I moved from a small town in Ontario back to downtown Toronto, where I was born and raised. Adjusting to my new neighborhood, I relished the convenience of walking to work and enjoying the vibrant energy of the city.

Sunday brunch has become a cherished treat for me after a busy week. On one such Sunday, I decided to try out a new restaurant/pub. There, I met Bill, a warm and friendly gentleman who served me. Despite being the only server at times, he managed to maintain a positive attitude and take care of every hungry customer.

Over time, Bill and I became friends, bonding over our love for poetry and engaging conversations. We shared laughter, banter, and life experiences. Bill, a proud grandfather, expressed his longing to be closer to his grandchildren and retire from the service industry he had been a part of for years.

A few years later, Bill informed me that he and his wife were moving to Finland to retire. The pub organized a farewell party, and Bill invited me to attend. Although I felt shy about attending an event where I knew no one, I wanted to honor our friendship. I was moved to witness a diverse group of people celebrating Bill and the impact he had on their lives. Friends, customers, and former colleagues shared hilarious stories from his years in the service industry.

Even after his move, Bill and I stayed in touch. He shared captivating stories of his adjustment to Finland, describing the weather, culture, and his love for nature. Bill had a unique way of appreciating and capturing the beauty of life, evident in his breathtaking photographs of butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. His photos became a source of solace during the pandemic.

A few weeks ago, I received an email from Bill titled "Hello, my treasured friend." It was a heartfelt message expressing gratitude for our friendship, the meaningful discussions at the pub, and our shared writings and inspiration. Reading the email, I realized that Bill was bidding farewell. He revealed that he had entered palliative care due to the return of a terminal illness. Despite the devastating news, he had found peace in accepting his circumstances.

With tears in my eyes, I felt humbled by Bill's thoughtful acknowledgment of our connection and his appreciation for the time we spent together. I responded, acknowledging his faith and praying for a peaceful transition surrounded by loved ones. Bill's imminent departure reminded me of the impact we can have on others' lives. Whenever I encounter the beauty of nature, I think of him. He taught me to cherish the gift of life and prioritize human connections, no matter how stressful life may become.

In his parting words, Bill encouraged us to embrace life, prioritize health and happiness, and feel the warmth of the sun on our faces every day. I share these words in honour of my friend, who touched the lives of many and continues to inspire me to live each day to the fullest. Until we meet again, my beautiful friend.

All my love,

Samantha
