How to Know If You're Choosing the Right Career: A Journey to Fulfillment

In life, few decisions rival the significance of choosing the right career path. We often base these choices on a myriad of factors: societal expectations, financial prospects, and the influence of our family and mentors. However, what we sometimes overlook is the importance of personal fulfillment in our chosen vocation. Our careers consume a substantial portion of our lives, so it's crucial to ensure that we find true satisfaction in what we do.

I've had the privilege of meeting professionals from various walks of life, including doctors and lawyers, who were steered into their careers by well-meaning parents or teachers. Despite their success on paper, they found themselves trapped in a profession that didn't resonate with their true passions. Student debt loomed overhead, and the dream they once harbored felt distant.

During my career counseling program, I learned a staggering statistic: the average person changes professions at least 10 times during their career. As I speak to clients and share their experiences, I've witnessed the truth behind this statistic. Many of us venture into different industries, seeking that elusive sense of fulfillment.

If you find yourself at a crossroads, unsure of your career path, or dissatisfied with your current role, don't despair. There is hope. Start by embracing assessments that help you identify your values and strengths. This step was a game-changer for me when I was undergoing a career transition. I yearned for a job that would have a tangible impact on society, one where I could witness the direct influence of my efforts.

Once I completed these assessments, I sought guidance from a career counselor. Together, we identified potential vocations that would align with my aspirations. My counselor encouraged me to dip my toes into the waters of change by enrolling in an introductory course part-time, allowing me to continue my full-time job in the Ontario Public Service.

Those evening classes filled me with hope and joy. They unveiled a potential within me that I had never fully realized. Encouraged by this newfound perspective, I decided to take a sabbatical and enrolled in the full-time program. Little did I know that this decision would not only lead to a new profession but also enhance my abilities as a manager.

Through my education, I gained valuable skills that I could share with my colleagues in government. I became a better manager, offering career guidance to counsel, law students and articling students. I also had the opportunity to facilitate workshops for staff across our division, contributing to educational programs for public servants. To this day, these endeavors bring me immense satisfaction.

Choosing the right vocation can transform the way you contribute to the world and even elevate your performance in your current role. So, how can you move toward a more satisfying career and daily work experience? It starts with self-discovery.

Reflect on your values and interests. What once excited you in the early stages of your career may have evolved. Take values assessments and rediscover yourself. Perhaps there's an untapped aspect of your strengths and abilities that can bring you more joy.

Remember, you deserve to find fulfillment in your daily life, and it all begins with the belief that you can have a career that brings you satisfaction. It's never too late to strive for greatness and a more gratifying life. I, for one, decided to return to school in my mid-thirties, and the journey of learning continues. You can embark on this journey too!
