Navigating Transitions: Finding Clarity in Uncertainty

Transitions in life don’t always mean forward movement. Sometimes, they involve feeling lost, being in a fog, and experiencing confusion. Have you been there? Perhaps you finally land that job you thought you always wanted, or you move into your dream home, and then—out of nowhere—you feel adrift. You worked so hard to get here, but now you're left wondering: Is this it?

It’s not about being ungrateful; it’s simply how we’re wired. What if the real dream isn’t the final goal itself but the journey and the lessons along the way? Consider the marathon runner who crosses the finish line and immediately starts planning their next race. We are creatures who crave growth and challenge.

But what happens when your dream job suddenly isn’t yours anymore? Imagine working for years to climb the ladder, feeling secure in your role, and then one day—out of nowhere—you’re given a pink slip. The shock. The fear. The uncertainty. You find yourself in the space in between. The one we rarely talk about. The space where you question everything.

In this fog, there is opportunity—not to rush into the next milestone, but to pause and reflect. Instead of scrambling for the next rung on the ladder, ask yourself: Why was this dream important to me? What truly matters now? Meaning is deeply tied to our sense of well-being. Often, we believe financial security will bring us peace, but once we have it, we fear losing it. The cycle continues until we recognize that true stability comes from within.

So how do we embrace the unknown? It starts by seeking something greater than the tangible. Go within.

I recently experienced this firsthand on a flight. Midflight, I put on my headphones and began to meditate, focusing on my breath. Fifteen minutes later the pilot announces our descent. I am still deep in meditation and when I open my eyes, look out the window - we are flying over the landing strip. Suddenly, as the wheels were about to touch the ground, the plane pulled up, aborting the landing. The silence in the cabin was deafening. I used to be a nervous flyer, but instead of panicking, I chose to stay in meditation. I breathed deeply and sent positive energy to the pilots, the plane, and everyone on board. I reminded myself that I was not in control—so I had to trust.

We circled high into the sky before making a second approach. As we finally landed safely, passengers around me voiced their fear. Some had never experienced an aborted landing before. But I was shocked by my own calmness. Meditation had prevented me from spiraling into fear. It reinforced a lesson we all need to hear: We cannot control everything, but we can control our response.

Right now, many of us are facing uncertainty. Whether it’s job loss, career transitions, or personal crossroads, there is nothing wrong with feeling lost. It is in these quiet moments—when we allow our minds to rest—that curiosity, creativity, and clarity emerge.

So, if you find yourself in the space in between, remember: You don’t have to figure it all out today. Trust the process. The answers will come.
